So Thankful
This is just a post giving thanks and also one of reflection.
I’m so thankful that I got to spend time with my mom before she passed, and also how our family came together. I realize this is the next page in the chapter of life, where elder care and also helping those I love with disabilities will need more focus. I pray that I’m able to do even half of what my mom did.
Some of the spin-offs from the RUSH series are turning out to be novellas, while others have been moved up for ebook release. It all started with Somali Bantu refugee Aaliyah and the outlaw biker Aiden:
But why should guys have all the fun?

HUI – Any Day Now
I’d planned for HUI to be released on the 15th.
My new goal is to have it out any day now, and that’s what I’m concentrating on.
In addition to the a first chapter excerpt found here. I’ve included a couple of brief excerpts from the book:
Excerpt:
The very first woman he’d given his heart to was Nuri, his mother.
He loved her, not because she was exceptionally good or kind, but that she was resourceful. In a city where people were dropping in the streets from starvation, Nuri not only made sure they had food to eat, but that they shared their rations with others.
“See, your mother looks like a movie star in this photo,” his second mother, Eun-mi told him, her wrists shaking as she handled a black and white photo of Nuri. Posing in the large gathering space known as Kim-Il-sung square, Nuri could’ve passed for a flapper from some old Hollywood movie. Clothed in a long trench coat, Nuri’s mouth was darkened with lipstick and her teardrop shaped eyes appeared even larger, helped by liner that flared upwards from each eyelid. She wore a beret, so only the midnight curls framing her face could be seen. That small photograph shaded in black and gray was all he had to remember her by.
Each time his own eyes were enhanced with liner prior to a performance, Hui was reminded of her. Nuri’s beautiful heart shaped face was his face, and it had saved his life.
“Be glad that others can clearly see Nuri in you. This way, any man would be proud to call you his son,” Eun-mi had said. “Your mother had a talent of making friends of her enemies, and she has passed this gift on to you.”
Hui could no longer recall his Omma’s voice. But he had fond memories of walking along Kim-Il-sung square, marveling at the Grand People’s Study house, and the Juche Tower, a monument just across the Taedong river.

Excerpt:
Of the five reviews three were so-so, one was glowing, and the last read more like an endorsement for Russian ballerina Natalia Osipova, after the writer compared Natalia’s version of Kitri to hers.
Still, this was one of the only times her name had been mentioned as a professional dancer. Imani was over the moon with happiness. But that last review . . .
“You’re thinking too hard on one review.” Hui told her.

Becoming Hui
Dedicated. Deliberate. Humble. These are just some of the qualities Le Jong Hui exemplifies. But underneath his carefully crafted exterior is a man who fights to stay in control of his emotions . . . until he meets a woman who gets under his skin and takes his breath away.

My favorite scene from RUSH
RUSH, the story of a motorcycle gang member who falls for a Somali Bantu refugee is now live on Amazon.
My D’oh! moment: I have the US participation in Somalia listed as Operation Freedom when it was Operation Restore Hope.
I plan to correct that today.Okay, the edit is done. Now KDP has to update the Look Inside feature and the ebook itself. Here’s my favorite scene from the book:
Kerai, my second mother is watching TV in Ba’ba’s room. It is a bedroom they share at night, but it is his room when he comes home from work. She is very active, giggling and hollering at me to come in and close the door. “Aaliyah, what is it they are doing? He is having mani?”
On the TV, two people are rolling around on a bed. I sit down on my father’s bed, looking around the room at all he has. I did not know he enjoyed reading so many books. When I see the covers, they are of American celebrities with very big smiles.
“Aaliyah, watch them!” Kerai grabs my arm, looking over at me and laughing. “Oh, they are naked!”

RUSH Week, the final excerpt
A scene from RUSH:
I need to stress that this is an edited photo. I wanted to duplicate a scene from the book, so I manipulated purchased images to do it.
Final Excerpt:
AIDEN
Most days I only went to school when I felt like going. Sometimes I went just to keep warm and to be in the mix with kids closer to my age. The city had built a new high school that could hold two thousand kids. We had security cameras and computers in just about every classroom, but we were still the lowest performing school in the county.
Sometimes I’d pass a couple of them Somali kids in the hallway, but I could never get ’em to look me in the eye. I wasn’t sure if the girl I’d seen would be in with the ones at my school, but one day I was going up the stairs and a bunch of ’em were coming down, and while the ones in front were chattering away I saw her, the same girl who’d been playing in the snow.
