Woman on top
Nyesha Adu is nobody’s victim.
Over the years she’s left a trail of broken hearts and emptied bank accounts, but Takeshi Nishikowa is different. Sweetly earnest and fiercely protective of her, for the first time in Nyesha’s life she just might be ready to stick around for a while. That is, until secrets from her past threaten their growing love affair, forcing Takeshi to return to a life he’d left behind.
Excerpt:
Nyesha wore a black trench coat that was clinched at the waist. With her hands in her pockets, she did a bouncy walk toward him. “You’ve been following me.”
“No.”
“You’re not a very good liar.”
It was true. Her stare caused Takeshi to drop his head, unable to meet her eyes. “Yes,” he blurted.
“See? Now doesn’t it feel better to tell the truth?”
“Yes . . . and no.” Takeshi nodded vigorously as he answered, because he hadn’t been truthful. “No, I am ashamed.”
“Why? It’s kind of a turn on for me.”
Surprised, his head jerked up. “I-I thought you would be angry.”
“It’s not like you’re some kind of pervert. I know you from class. You’re the cute, shy one.”
Did he imagine what she’d just said? And did she really add a wink at the end of it? “I-I don’t understand.”
“Oh, you’re doing it again. I just love when you ask a question in class. You’re such a cutie.” Her bright smile was a welcome relief. Just as quickly it was replaced by a frown. “But I don’t think that hairdo does your face any favors. May I?”
“Yes, of course. Please.”
Using her fingers, Nyesha combed his hair away from his forehead. There were a few gray hairs blending into the black along his temple. “You’ve got a nice forehead, and your features are symmetrical. Without those bangs I notice your eyes a lot more.” She stepped back to admire her handiwork. “I really think I like your hair better off your face.”
“Yes, thank you. So do I.”
His answer made her laugh. “Are you saying that just to agree with me?” she teased.
“Y-yes.”
That earned him another grin from her. “I guess we might as well walk together instead of you trailing behind me.” When she linked an arm through his, Takeshi thought he was floating on air. “Listen, I’m dying for a cup of coffee. And maybe some scrambled eggs. And Ramen noodles. How’s about you take me to breakfast?”
“Yes, certainly.”
“I love it! You just keep saying yes to me, and you’re gonna be my new best friend.”
